S.J.Res. 59Failed
Pre-War Iran War Powers Resolution (S.J.Res. 59)
Vote: June 27, 2025Senate, 119th Congress, Session 1Roll Call #328
Summary
Motion to discharge from the Foreign Relations Committee. Filed months before the war began, this was the first attempt to block unauthorized military action against Iran under the War Powers Act.
Editorial Note
This vote happened eight months before the first bombs fell on Iran. Tim Kaine filed the resolution after months of escalating tensions and military buildup in the Persian Gulf. The Senate voted it down 47-53 on pure party lines. Worth reading that date again: June 2025. Congress had the chance to reassert its war powers before a single shot was fired, and 53 senators chose not to. Every one of them knew what was coming.
